HRM Assignment 4 - university's help for my future Ü

How could the university help?

This time our task for this assignment is to make a reflection of how the university could help reach my future dreams.. Ü

I believe the university will play a big role for me to achieve my dreams. This institution really taught me lot. As in so much, not just on academic matters but also about life. In my previous posts on the recent assignments I have mentioned of my dream of becoming a good graphic designer someday. (how I wish..Ü) Although the not much of the subjects I had taken up and I will take up does not relate with being a graphic designer or the like jobs still I believe that the university had taught me a lot and a lot more in the years to come.

Studying in a good institution pays a lot in the future of its students. Being a student of the University of Southeastern Philippines which others see as a leading institution in the south, of course it makes me proud to a part of the university and makes me strive for the better. Ü As what my other classmates said for a good institution there should be proper equipments and facilities specially for us in the field of technology to support the student's studies and in the university there might be some problem regarding this. Yes, I'm talking about the controversial computer units in the laboratory. hehe But I think this should not hinder us through success but make us strive more and teach us to be more resourceful but then this issue should still need to be resolved.
As far as my stay in this institution there are lots of struggles I had already gone through and I know there are much as in so much more to in the future. With those lots and lots struggles, there are also lots and lots of things that I have learned and thanks to USEP for that. College or should I say studying life is definitely a big big challenge for everyone but then this will definitely shape us into becoming what is best for us and what we dream to do.
Whatever I may be in the future, whatever job I will get, I would always be thankful and be proud of my school. yeah. Proud to be USEPIAN.. Ü
Thanks for reading!! God Bless!

COMDDAP Davao 2009

The COMDDAP experience... Ü

COMDDAP DAVAO EXPO 2009

July 2-4, Apo View Hotel, Davao City
"Where the highest mountain in the land rises over the vast rich plains of Davao, where the king of Philippine birds soar over his domain, the giant of all Philippine I.T. shows once more unfolds its latest event. It's COMDDAP Davao 2009 - the biggest I.T. expo held regularly in the South." http://www.comddap.org/events.htm

What is COMDDAP??

"COMDDAP is an association of the country's top information technology businesses. Its primary objective is to promote the sustainable development of the of the country's information technology industry through voluntary collaboration of its member companies. It is the goal of COMDDAP to be able to provide its members general views and updates from different sectors - private and government, and highly regarded individuals to further uplift the morale and knowledge of its organization. The vision of promoting and elevating the standards of Information technology (IT) in the Philippines fueled a group of prominent computer companies to form the Computer Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines or COMDDAP. Its initial member-companies represent the world's leading makers and providers of computer products, solutions and peripherals. In 1997, the manufacturing sector - represented by industry leaders Hewlett Packard, Epson and Compaq, among others - was integrated into the COMDDAP membership, making the association a more diverse representation of the IT sector and thus the new name, COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS, DISTRIBUTORS AND DEALERS ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES."
See more details on their site:

Last July 2, 2009 me and my fellow classmates and schoolmates attended the COMDDAP Davao Expo 2009 at Apo View Hotel. It was amusing to be attending those kinds of expos because you get to see the big time people on the technology industry. We look around and saw different technologal advancement with the latest computers, gadgets, different sytems and other computer stuffs. It was fun and amusing seeing all of those. We also get to have some freebies from different booths in the expo. weeh,. hehe That's fun!!
After roaming around we attended the different sessions featuring some big companies in the technology industry. The room was full of students proffesionals and other visitors mostly are from USEP. hehe The first session I attended was about ERIC(Enterprise Resource & Information Control) Managment System. ERIC creates great automotive dealers systems for big automotive dealers around the world. The session was conducted by Mr Celmer L. Santos.
Below is a brief profile of ERIC DMS I go from their site.

ERIC DMS - Dealer Management System

The ERIC Dealer Management System (DMS) is an end-t-o-end software solution for automotive sales, parts and service businesses. ERIC DMS covers the full range of dealer activities-from marketing to sales and services.
Aside from core business operations, DMS includes a full ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and completely automates and integrates back office operations all the way to financial reporting.

With ERIC DMS, you can have full visibility over all operations.

• Control parts & consumables cost
• Monitor and correctly implement warranty for parts & service
• Report your financial bottom line

DMS Process Flow

"ERIC Dealership Management System (DMS) A complete, end-to-end solution for vehicle dealers, distributors, and service providers."

The second session I had attended was about the new feature hardware of HP(Hewlett Packard) which is the thin client. At first sight I was curious of what that thing is and how does it work. Thin Client is a hardware that is preferably used for small to medium business. It is best fitted for Counter internet kiosk and etc. There are a lot of advantages of Thin Clients like its simplicity, size, remoteness, security and energy consumption.

What is a thin client?
"Thin clients are computing devices that function as an access device on a network. These solid-state devices connect over a network to a server where the bulk of the processing takes place. Thin clients have no hard drive, allowing for more secure storage of data and applications on the server. In fact, keystrokes, mouse events and screen images are all that is sent between the client and server. This makes the device much more secure than a standard desktop or notebook computer.
With no hard drive, fan or other moving parts, thin clients have a much longer lifespan than standard computers and use significantly less power. Lower maintenance costs are another benefit as software application updates, virus scanning and patches can be executed on the server. Deployment costs are also reduced as thin clients can be remotely configured and do not need to be set up individually. Break-fix simply requires replacing the thin client."

The whole experience was really great. Even I havent won the freebies. hehe We had fun roaming around different booths and see what' the newest product of technology. I look forward of attending expos like COMDDAP again.

Here are some snap shots of my experience..

HRM Assignment 3 - different online services

Online Job Services... Ü
This is for our third assignment in HRM. For this assignment, we were tasked to look for five (5) different online job services and after which we need to write a brief evaluation of the services and choose one that we liked best. If I'm not mistaken on-line job services are those job services offered online or should I say through the internet. These are services that can be done even at home where you only have to connect through the web. That is my own perspective of an online job service. As I look for different online jobs I noticed some online service like surveys that says they pay you if you take their survey are said to be scams. Well, probably there are really online scams just freely dwelling on the web. Hehe.

I surf the web for different online job services and I was able to find the following:

♥Online tutors

"Online tutors work for internet based companies that offer help, within a variety of subject areas, to students of all ages. Many online tutor positions offer flexible hours. Most companies require a college education, teaching experience, and/or knowledge in the subject area they will be tutoring.Smart Thinking This site hires on a regular basis for a variety of different subject areas. Once hired and after completing the E-structor® Certification, which is an "online specific training program", tutors work a minimum of 9 hours per week on a fixed weekly schedule." http://jobsearch.about.com/od/workfromhome/g/onlinetutor.htm

♥ Assignment Maker Online

"The Assignments With The Assignment just a click away, there is no need to struggle with writing an assignment anymore! Do you have to spend fruitless hours every day, dig into textbooks to research and look for proper references in getting your assignment done? All this is going nowhere and your deadline is looming large? Maybe there is too much information that you can’t figure out what to include or perhaps the information is not at all adequate? If all this sounds like you, The Assignment is here to help you in improving your grades and help you achieve academic success. Over the years, we have helped thousands of students of all academic levels to meet the stipulation of academic writing standards in the UK." http://www.theassignments.co.uk/

♥Data Entry Job

"No special experience is needed to be a part of this unique and highly successful program. So as long as you have internet, a keybaord and the ability to spend at least 1/2 hour a day, you can make thousands of dollars by simply using your fingers and mouse to complete simple data entry tasks. You are in complete control there are no deadlines. " http://www.mydatajob.com

Online Magazine Writer

"Magazines are consumer friendly and offer many opportunities for freelancers and advertising professionals to find a telecommuting career. There are many home-based jobs such as freelance writing, photography, editing, graphic designers, advertising sales and promotion available. Many magazines have also gone online in the form of digital magazines so there are additional opportunities for online content managers, journalists, web designers, and community managers to work as well. Be sure to check out the many online roles in the Magazine world here at Flexjobs." http://www.flexjobs.com/jobs/online-magazine

♥Online Graphic Designers

"Graphic Designers produce visual solutions to the communications needs of their clients through a variety of creative skills and commercial awareness. Graphic Designers are creative people who have a flair for what is appealing to consumers, are aware of upcoming trends and can convert their ideas into visually pleasing images. There are many avenues for Graphic designers to work virtually in marketing, technology and commercial industries. Other job titles for Graphic Designers are Commercial Artist, Illustrator, Designer, Conceptual Professional, Art Director, Layout Manager, and Creative Director. "http://www.flexjobs.com/jobs/graphic-design

Among the five online jobs I have mentioned above, the one I liked best is the online graphic designer. As I've mentioned on my other post for my second assignment I love things in line with arts and designing that is why I chose the graphic designer. I guess it is fun being one because you get design and layout something that would be of help of the client or the one you are serving. Aside from you get to hel your client also you feel comfortable because your work could just be done at home or wherever your comfort is. How I wish this would be my future job. Ü LOL

HRM Assignment 2 - future job

My envisioned future job…Ü

For our second assignment in HRM we were tasked to develop a job description for a job we want to hold in the future.
I really find this assignment interesting because I am free to imagine myself on the future. haha Actually when I first read of this assignment, there were so many kinds of jobs that popped onto my head. It’s fun to imagine things specially what will you become in the future but it is more fun and fulfilling when you actually bring this to reality. Yeah!

It’s hard for me to choose one specific job I want for the future because there’s a lot of jobs that comes out of my mind. Hehe.. So many IT related jobs I had thought and some are not. Even before taking up this course I have always thought of myself as an IT professional. hAha But there are many kinds of job available for an IT professional. I can’t actually think of one specific job but I somewhat want to see myself in the future with a job in the line of graphics designing. From those two it’s pretty much obvious that I like things in line with arts and designs.
I looked for definitions of the jobs I wanted to hold in the future and these are the following:
“Graphic Design jobs involve working with employees (in-house) or external customers to create, printed collateral, web design layouts, banners, advertisements and many other high quality designs.Duties generally include using desktop publishing and other specialized computer software to design, organize, and prepare a variety of text, illustrative and graphics materials, and perform related tasks as determined to be necessary.A Degree in Art, Marketing, Graphic Design and/or Visual Communications, or equivalent work experience is usually required. Graphic Design jobs tend to require experience in project planning, computer proficiency, knowledge of the production process, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work individually or in a group setting. A good eye for typography, proficiency on both a PC and MAC platforms and a high level of knowledge in multiple design programs are a plus. “
http://www.teksystems.com/Careers/Graphic-Design-Jobs.aspx
“Graphic designers—or graphic artists—plan, analyze, and create visual solutions to communications problems. They find the most effective way to get messages across in print, electronic, and film media using a variety of methods such as color, type, illustration, photography, animation, and various print and layout techniques. Graphic designers develop the overall layout and production design of magazines, newspapers, journals, corporate reports, and other publications. They also produce promotional displays, packaging, and marketing brochures for products and services, design distinctive logos for products and businesses, and develop signs and signage systems—called environmental graphics—for business and government. An increasing number of graphic designers also develop material for Internet Web pages, interactive media, and multimedia projects. Graphic designers also may produce the credits that appear before and after television programs and movies.”

Just from the description of what is a graphic designer, I became more interested and eager of becoming one (hope so!). If I am to have this job I would really enjoy doing it in service of the clients I would have in the future (Can’t wait of “that” future) hehe. To be a graphic designer you must have patience and perseverance of what you are doing because developing a method of designing requires much time, attention and hard work for it to produce a good and efficient work of art. But before I could become one, this time as a student I should of course do well on my studies and learn in advance of different softwares and methods on how to create excellent designs. I believe the future lies on our own hands and guided by our Heavenly Father.

I think that’s all for this assignment post.

Thank you for reading!! God Bless!! Ü

HRM Assignment 1 - Company's best HR practices

Assignment 1 - HRM

On our other subject Management Information System 1 which is also under Sir Gamboa, we had done with the best IS/IT practices of the company we had adopted. This time our task is to identify the best HR or Human Resource practices of our chosen company to adopt. For this assignment I had proposed the companies, GH Office Depot, Davao Light and Power Company, Hubport Interactive, EMCOR, Sutherland Global Services and Apo View Hotel. Among the companies I’ve mention two are actually approved, Davao Light and Power Co. and Apo View Hotel. And I chose Davao Light for this assignment.

For this assignment, we had visited Davao Light and Power Company and interview their former HR supervisor and now a consultant of DLPC Ms. Jane Lee.

First I will give a brief profile of Davao Light and Power Company.
Located at C. Bangoy Sr. Street (formerly Ponciano Reyes Street)Davao City 8000 Philippines
"Davao Light and Power Company is the third largest privately-owned electric utility in the Philippines. It holds the franchise for distributing electric power to Davao City, the largest city in the world in terms of land area, as well as Panabo City and the municipalities of Carmen, Dujali, and Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte. On September 29, 2000, the franchise was renewed for another 25 years by virtue of Republic Act 8960.
In 2007, the company sold 1.333 billion kilowatt-hours to 247,341 customers with a peak demand of 245 megawatts (MW). Among the country’s most efficiently run power utilities, its systems loss rate of 8.13% is well below the government mandated cap of 9.50%.
Davao Light maintains a 53.8 MW standby diesel power plant with a capability of 40 MW for sustained operations. As needed, it is activated to stabilize voltage as well as augment the power supply of its primary generating sources. It makes use of a fully functional automated mapping and facilities management (AM/FM) system to track the location of electric distribution assets in its franchise. Also in place is a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, a facility that allows remote real-time data gathering and control of equipment in all power substations.
High-end computers, sophisticated software, and other devices are being used to speed up meter reading, streamline billing, provide efficient and prompt response to customer inquiries, generate management information, and analyze electrical grid information.
Special attention has been devoted to improving Davao Light’s service standards.
Innovative re-engineering efforts have cut down service cycle times. Outsourcing of tasks and reallocating manpower and other resources has allowed the utility to improve productivity while keeping costs relatively stable. Current efforts focus on teamwork, service excellence, professionalism, and innovation in preparation for a deregulated and competitive environment. Now and in the future, Davao Light is committed to deliver reliable and efficient service at reasonable rates.”
http://davaolight.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=45&Itemid=55

Vision Statement

We aim to be the country’s leader in providing electric power and related services by becoming a world-class electric distribution company. The ultimate satisfaction of our customers is the driving purpose of our existence. We aspire for excellence in everything we do by adhering to the highest standards of professionalism, by making integrity the foundation of all our relationships, and by focusing on the unlimited potential of our people. We are a responsible partner on the road to progress and development, essential to our community’s collective hope for a better life. We will light the way.

Mission Statement

We are an electric company committed to deliver, at the most reasonable cost, safe and reliable electric service to the people and the commercial and industrial establishments of the cities of Davao and Panabo, and the Municipalities of Carmen, Dujali and Sto. Tomas. We affirm that the ultimate measure of our success is the satisfaction of our customers.

What is Human Resource Department?

“The forward thinking human resource department is devoted to providing effective policies, procedures, and people-friendly guidelines and support within companies. Additionally, the human resource function serves to make sure that the company mission, vision, values or guiding principles, the company metrics, and the factors that keep the company guided toward success are optimized.

The most common Human Resource jobs that are grouped in the Human Resource Department are the Human Resources Director, Human Resources Generalist, and Human Resources Assistant. Additionally, some organizations have a Vice President of Human Resources and employees who are organized around providing a specific component of Human Resource services including compensation, training, organization development, and safety.”
http://humanresources.about.com/od/glossaryh/f/hr_department.htm
HRD for me..

As what I’ve understand Human Resource Department is the one concerned on the employees and staffs of a company. They are the one concerned about hiring, taking disciplinary measures and other matters regarding the workers and staff of the company. The HRD is also concerned non the application of skills, knowledge and experience, employee relations and resource planning in various levels.

According to Ms. Jane Lee for her the Human Resource Department bridges the gap between the people and the management. The HR Department also takes care of the employees. I believe the HRD plays a very important role for every company.

Best practices..

I believe every company has their own good practices in each of their departments. We asked Ms. Lee what are DLPC's best HR practices. Like from the other companies we visited, Ms. Lee said she cannot specify which are their "best" practices but instead she shared some of their company's practices regarding trainings, counseling and career planning. The following are DLPC's practices on their HRD:

On employees and staffs
DLPC don't just hire employees but they pick those who have great potentials that possibly help the company in the future. For example hiring a line man, they hire those who are graduates of Electrical Engineering and then if the employees does well he could be promoted to higher position. They also hire those who had done On the job trainings(OJT) on their company and showed great potentials on their OJT. According to Ms. Lee they always give trainings to their employees either new or old. These training would be a help to make their employees and staff do better in their work. They have this Universal Training Plan (UTP) which contains the trainings that the company will be holding and to whom should it be given. They have in-house and technical trainings for their employees and staff. They usually have outsource resource person to conduct the trainings meaning they hire people outside their company to conduct the training for their employees.

Some of the trainings they give are:
-Introduction to Finance Training
-Presentation skills training
-Personal Enhancement Training
Technical training (Engineering staffs)
nd other more trainings..

They do technical training annually for their engineering employees to enhance their abilities and to serve heir customers better. They also provide team building activities for every department that would make a beJust like other companies before an employee will become regular they should first undergo to a 6-month probationary period.

DLPC also have different organizations that their employees could join into like Sports Organizations, Tall masters group, tribes( for sharing, monthly meeting and team building). These organizations would allow their employees to enjoy their hobbies with other co-workers.

DLPC also require their employees and staff to have their proper grooming with their proper uniform, which is of course a good image to the customers.

They also provide coulseling for their employees who have personal problems at work or at home. This would improve their emplyees performance just like in training.

Benefits for employees and their dependents

- Basic Retirement Plan for the retirees
-Insurance plan for unwanted cases
-health insurance
-discount in every check up in their health status
-Good wage rate if you are a regular employee, you will have an increase of 1000.00 pesos each year,
every year they have a budget for their uniform.
-customer’s security and privacy, the same with the employees.
-Each year the company celebrates its Christmas party, and the employees are given their 13th month pay.If an employee is new, he or she will undergo the casual position, which means they have a 6 months contract to prove if they deserve the job, if they are deserving they will be a regular employee but if not then sorry to tell, they will be out
-benefits for the employees dependents
-scholarship grants for students

DLPC provides scholarship grants for deserving students for them to continue college and in the future they could hire these students who excels in school. They have scholarships for students who wants to take up courses like EE, ECE, and, IE.

think that is all I could share about this assignment.. Thank you..

MIS Assignment 4 - Green Campus Computing

Green Campus Computing.. Ü

First got this definition of green computing from Wikipedia.

“Green computing is the study and practice of using computing resources efficiently. The primary objective of such a program is to account for the triple bottom line, an expanded spectrum of values and criteria for measuring organizational (and societal) success. The goals are similar to green chemistry; reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.
Modern IT systems rely upon a complicated mix of people, networks and hardware; as such, a green computing initiative must be systemic in nature, and address increasingly sophisticated problems. Elements of such a solution may comprise items such as end user satisfaction, management restructuring, regulatory compliance, disposal of electronic waste, telecommuting, virtualization of server resources, energy use, thin client solutions, and return on investment (ROI).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_computing

Now here are 3 URL’s that talks about green Campus computing

http://www.beloit.edu/isr/greencomputing.php#GreenComputing
From Beloit College

What is Green Computing?
Green computing is the environmentally responsible use of technology.

What can I do to “green” my technology use?

•Enable power management
on your computer.
•Power down the computer and monitor when not in use.
•Consider plugging your computer and peripherals into a power strip with an on/off switch and turn the entire power strip off when not in use.
•Think before you print. Do you really need a paper copy?
•Use recycled paper if possible
•Use Print Preview to review your job before printing it
•Print in black and white whenever possible.
•Print two-sided whenever possible.
•Reuse unnecessary print jobs as scratch paper.
•Advertise events, parties, etc. electronically or with chalk instead of print-outs.
•Recycle!
○Use the recycling bins around campus to recycle paper, glass, aluminum, and plastic
○Toner on campus can be brought to ISR for recycling
○Beloit College computers and laptop batteries can be brought to ISR for recycling
○Recycle used alkaline batteries in Pearsons by the mail center or in the Library
•Use email instead of faxes
•If you are in the market for a new computer at home, consider buying an Energy Star compliant computer

•If it’s possible, download software from the web instead of purchasing a physical installation disc

How can I change my computer’s settings to be more green?
What is Power management and how does it help?
Every day energy is wasted by computers and monitors that are left on when not in use. By simply putting the hard drive and monitor to sleep after a short period of inactivity, huge energy savings can be realized. The computer should wake up with a quick click of the mouse or by pressing a key on the keyboard. In some cases, you will need to press the power button briefly to wake the computer up. Also, be sure to shut down your computer before leaving for the day and over weekends. Use this handy
c
alculator to get an idea of how much energy and money can be saved.

http://ecenter.colorado.edu/energy/projects/green_computing.html

From University of Colorado Environmental Center

The growing use of computers on campus has caused a dramatic increase in energy consumption, putting negative pressure on CU’s budget and the environment. Each year more and more computers are purchased and put to use, but it’s not just the number of computers that is driving energy consumption upward. The way that we use computers also adds to the increasing energy burden.
Research reveals that most personal desktop computers are not being used the majority of the time they are running and many personal computers nationwide are needlessly left on continuously. Every time we leave computers or lights on we waste electricity. Burning fossil fuels generates most of our electricity and it also emits pollutants, sulfur, and carbon dioxide into the air. These emissions can cause respiratory disease, smog, acid rain and global climate change.
Over the last fifteen years, computers have transformed the academic and administrative landscape at the University of Colorado. There are now over 18,000 computers on campus. Personal computers (PC) operation alone may directly account for nearly $550,000 per year in University energy costs.
Computers generate heat and require additional cooling which adds to energy costs. Thus, the overall energy cost of CU’s personal computers is more likely around $700,000.
Meeting computer cooling needs in summer (and winter) often compromises the efficient use of building cooling and heating systems by requiring colder fan discharge temperatures. In the summer, these temperatures may satisfy computer lab cooling needs while overcooling other spaces.
Given CU’s commitment to energy conservation and the environmental stewardship, we must address the issue of responsible computer use. By adopting conserving practices, annual savings of $300,000-400,000 are possible.
How Much Energy Does Your Computer System Use?A typical desktop PC system is comprised of the computer itself (the CPU or the “box”), a monitor, and printer. Your CPU may require approximately 100 watts of electrical power. Add 50-150 watts for a 15-17 inch monitor, proportionately more for larger monitors. The power requirements of conventional laser printers can be as much as 100 watts or more when printing though much less if idling in a “sleep mode.” Ink jet printers use as little as 12 watts while printing and 5 watts while idling.
http://chronicle.com/free/2009/01/10296n.htm
From The Chronicles of Higher Education
Campus Computing Goes Green to Save Money
By JOSH KELLER

Relocate a college's server computers next to a solar-power generator. Replace AC power with DC power. Cool the servers only where they get the hottest. Put the servers in the ocean and power them with waves. Those were a few of the ideas discussed last week at a conference, "Greening the Internet Economy," that was designed to address the problem of the soaring financial and environmental costs of information technology. The event, held
by the University of California at San Diego, offered a sampling of a new generation of technologies that promise to help colleges make their IT departments both more efficient and more sustainable.
Many of the participants emphasized the importance of systems that could more intelligently measure energy use on the campus. In recent years, colleges have been hurt by the rising costs of powering and cooling their data centers, in part because those costs are difficult to measure and poorly understood (The Chronicle, January 9).
At San Diego, researchers have started work on hardware to help colleges and other organizations understand how to make their servers more efficient. The device, called the GreenLight Instrument, will deploy sensors and software to measure the energy use, humidity, and other variables in various parts of a Sun Modular Data Center, a popular, self-contained complex of servers.
The goal is to encourage engineers to try different computing strategies to reduce electricity consumption, said Thomas A. DeFanti, principal investigator on the project and a senior research strategist at the university's California Institute for
Telecommunications and Information Technology.
"Right now there isn't enough information for somebody to make a definitive decision: Where do I save my money? Do I eliminate disks in my computers, or do I stop them? Do I use more RAM or less RAM?" said Mr. DeFanti. "Nobody has detailed information on this."
Aiming for Precision
Intelligent measuring systems like Greenlight should be extended to allow engineers to more precisely determine how to use energy, said Gary L. Baldwin, director of special projects at the University of California's Citris program. For example, he said, operators at a data center could direct cool air only where the facility is generating the most heat.
Another idea that shows promise, participants said, is to supply computers directly with local DC power. Computers generally use direct current, but the public electricity grid
typically supplies alternating current, and 30 percent of the electricity can be lost in the conversion of one form to the other.
Some colleges have started projects to power their computers directly from solar cells or other sources of DC power on the campus, avoiding the energy loss altogether. At San Diego, administrators hope to build a "power ring" that will supply computers across the campus with DC power, said Mr. DeFanti.
The rethinking of how to supply campus power is part of a broader effort to "divorce ourselves from the electrical grid," said Bill St. Arnaud, chief research officer at Canarie Inc., a Canadian computer-networking organization. Power-transmission lines lose a significant amount of energy over long distances, he said, which means that supplying a campus with energy from faraway power plant can be inefficient. A better strategy, Mr. St. Arnaud said, is to build campus data centers next to a renewable source of power, like a solar plant. High-speed optical transmission lines, he said, would ensure that the computers would seem "as close as next door."
My View...
This Green Campus Computing is really a great way to save and protect our environment and it would be good if this will be implemented in the school. But it is not easy to do this right away with just a snap of a finger. I know USEP could implement this if all of us in the university would cooperate with each other. Everything could be achieved if there is cooperation.

For the university to adopt this green campus computing I would suggest we first try to do it at home. Each of us could start to conserve energy not just on computers but other electrical appliances by turning it of and unplugging it when not in use. We could be used of this habit and eventually bring it at school. In the university, example after a class in the computer laboratory, computers are not unplugged after a session because it will be used by the following section. But then I believe there are still some ways to conserve energy. I have also read in an article that screen savers could also consume much energy so as much as possible we should not anymore put screen savers in our computers. Adopting green campus computing is not an easy task but I believe when there is cooperation this could actually be implemented soon after.

MIS Assignment 3 - thoughts on automated election

Automated or Manual poll??

Today in the technological world everything is changing or should I say developing. New gadgets and technologies are being introduced and all. That is IT, discovering, producing and developing new technologies. The issue now is, should the 2010 Philippine national election be automated or still manual.

What is automated voting?
I got this definition from Carter center.
“Automated voting (sometimes referred to as electronic or e-voting) technologies are increasingly used in elections across the world, particularly because they are often seen as symbolic of a country’s level of modernization. The possibilities for rapid aggregation and analysis of results, as well as potentially greater accuracy, have all added to the attractiveness of computer-based voting equipment. There is little doubt that the ability to quickly publish results can be of particular advantage in conflict and post-conflict scenarios, where a prolonged period of counting can heighten tensions and reduce confidence in the final results. The potential to remove some traditional elements of unintentional voter error or intentional fraud can also contribute to greater confidence, while at the same time raising new questions.”

Automation of the election process has been an issue in the Philippines even before. For me, as an Information Technology student, I agree of pursuing an automated election but at the right time. For now when it is still an issue whether to pursue automation or not, I think a change of the system of election should be done step by step. There should first be proper information and orientation to the people and then be familiar with the system. It would be better if the automation of the election in the Philippines would be done first in a certain portion of the country to observe if it is effective and also for the citizens not to be shocked with a new system of election. This has been done to some foreign countries until all of their regions got automated elections. In ARMM, automated election has been tested. And as the results more number of ARMM citizens had voted. This is a positive view of having an automated election.

“This is a great leap forward for our country. This about making sure that every vote of every Filipino is counted, and counted properly. This about giving the future of the Philippines back to its own people,”
–Sen. Gordon
http://www.philippinestoday.net/index.php?module=article&view=47

This statement from senator Gordon is a positive view of the automation issue. Yes having polls automated would count every Filipinos vote.
Now in my own understanding I will give what would be the possible advantage sand disadvantages of pursuing automated elections.

Advantages:
•less labor - specially for teachers
•easy voting – in favor of those illiterate citizens
•quick results - will take more or less a day
•less CHEATING
•accuracy or results

Disadvantages:
•Computer error/ system problem
•automated CHEATING XD

There really are a lot of advantages of making the 2010 poll automated. Teachers won’t have to stay awake just for tallying the election results plus it would be less dangerous for them because that’s what I’ve observe on election tallying. There are a lot of threats to teachers because they are the one who counts the ballots and of course to those who wants to cheat don’t care even if they could harm the teachers who risk their lives to protect the citizens vote. It’s all the computers job. Automated election would also be easier specially for those citizens who can’t read and write because it just tale a click to vote. Another advantage is that results can easily be obtained and make no time for cheating. (IT cuts time) There would be less cheating because everything is automated and there are no ballots to steal. Results could be more accurate than manual elections because systems are accurately made.
“Cezar Flores, a spokesman for Smartmatic, said winners in national contests would be known in as soon as two days. Flores added that more than 90% of election results would be in within the first six hours after precincts are closed. He also said the count would have “100% accuracy.””
http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=301780&version=1&template_id=45&parent_id=25

But there could also be some disadvantages of having automated elections. One is possible system failure. It would be a problem if ever the system would malfunction. As I have mentioned earlier there could be less cheating because tallying is fully automated but we never know with the advance technology cheating could also be automated.
“Despite the assurances, some politicians and analysts said they were not 100% confident that the automation of the 2010 polls would proceed smoothly, especially since it would be the first time for the system to be used in the Philippines.“
http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=301780&version=1&template_id=45&parent_id=25

“The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) are now on the mindset of going back to manual counting if Smartmatic and TIM will not resolve their conflict. The COMELEC has given the two corporations until Friday to decide whether or not they could push through with the automation contract for the 2010 elections.”

SMARTMATIC and TIM. At present, we always hear of Smartmatic and TIM (Total Information Management Corp.). These are the two corporations I have been hearing on the news these past days. This is a really big talk-about in the country today.

About Smartmatic and Total Information Management Corporation (TIM)
Smartmatic International Corp. (Smartmatic) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Smartmatic International Holding, BV, a company organized under the laws of The Netherlands. Smartmatic has organized elections using its electronic voting solutions in Latin America, the Carribean, the United States, and Asia.Total Information Management Corporation (TIM) is a domestic corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1981. The corporation is engaged in the business of information technology and service provider.

The two corporations are the winning bidders of the 2010 election among the seven which have been chosen before. Some conflicts also came out among the two but then are reolved.

With all the controversies of the automation of the 2010 elections, it would still be on the Filipinos descision of who they want to seat at the top. But it could also be up to the “cheating politician” to control the results. But as citizens of the country we would definitely not agree of letting our votes go to waste.

MIS Assignment 2 - risk associated w/ business & IS/IT change

Assignment 2 - MIS

For Assignment our second assignment in MIS 1, our task now is to identify the risks associated with business and IS/IT change based on the interview we had conducted on the visited company or organization. The first assignment was "barely unsuccessful" if I was to describe. I had finished the assignment and that is a positive side saying I had done it. Yes it was finished but we had done it the wrong way. :'c AS what I've mentioned on my post in assignment 1 most of us were not aware of our own responsibilities. But this time I guess I’ve improved a little, because I had done it ahead of time. Weeh.Suppose to be I have to adopt EMCOR for this assignment but I haven’t included it on my approval. The two approved companies for this assignment are Hubport Interactive and GH Office Depot. Hubport was my first priority suppose to be but unfortunately, they didn’t call us for a scheduled interview. But luckily I have GH as a reserve. Hehe

GH Office Depot
GH Office Depot is a super-market type of stationary store located at Monteverde Ave. Davao City. GH is a dealer of different office and school supplies. As I’ve mentioned on my first assignment, GH has their best IS/IT practices such as having their own system, website security cameras, biometrics scanner and other hardware they have.
“The company started as small office stationery dealer in 1967. By the grace of God and through its continuous quest for quality and better products to serve its clientele. It has gained the confidence and patronage of its clients. The clientele expanded to what it is today, a big solid majority share in the market. The company opened its door to the general public in 1995 by opening up a modest yet modern retail outfit. A supermarket-type of stationery store. The concept was overwhelming accepted by the general public. The retail outlet and network continue to grow and expand. Today, it is a big business outfit housed in a modern complex with all the convenient facilities and amenities. The GH OFFICE DEPOT carries in its inventory more than 12,000 items of office items to serve its clients. The company keeps on updating and upgrading its list of items to cope up with the current trend in office management. And to serve its clients with the latest and most up-to-date office supplies and equipments.”

What is IS/IT?
In a general sense, the term Information System (IS) refers to a system of people, data records and activities that process the data and information in an organization, and it includes the organization's manual and automated processes. In a narrow sense, the term information system (or computer-based information system) refers to the specific application software that is used to store data records in a computer system and automates some of the information-processing activities of the organization. Computer-based information systems are in the field of information technology. The discipline of business process modelling describes the business processes supported by information systems.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_systems
Information technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology

What IS/IT change?
“Information systems and organizations influence one another. Information systems are built by managers to serve the interests of the business firm. At the same time, the organization must be aware of and open to the influences of information systems to benefit from new technologies. The interaction between information technology and organizations is complex and is influenced by many mediating factors, including the organization’s structure, business processes, politics, culture, surrounding environment, and management decisions. You will need to understand how information systems can change social and work life in your firm. You will not be able to design new systems successfully or understand existing systems without understanding your own business organization.”

My Views and Opinion..
This is of my own understanding. From the above statement IS and the organization influence each other so if the factors mentioned above change, there is also a change in the organization and this includes some risks. As technology changes then such organization or business must cope up with these changes in order to preserve their businesses. Such changes should also address to the needs and demands of the customer and user in order for the business to be valued by their customers. There is a need for improvement of IS because this is important for a business. As quoted from Mr. Po. “Kung walay IS ambot kung makasurvive mi.” Hehe A company definitely needs IT and IS in order to survive.

In our interview with Mr. Hector Po who is the IT Supervisor of GH Office Depot he stated that they to have encountered technological changes and this drove them to improve their business. One risk involved of encountering changes in an organization in my own perspective as what I have mentioned above is coping up with such change. Another is systems change. The system would somehow be affected with such change so there would be a risk having difficulties in managing systems and data. Company system is really such a big help for a business because this will help them lessen some work loads. According to Mr. Po whenever they have to change their system they first ask and study the users need from feedbacks. Then they will consult to the department head and managers as to what should be the possible action for such change. Then the work of IT analyst comes as to what changes he will be making in the system. This is what they do so they could cope up with changes and avoid problems in the future.

I guess I have relayed everything we had on our interview and I hope I have done what is tasked for this assignment. hmp That's all. Thank you. Hehe
